Suicide Prevention Month

Suicide prevention month

Drawing of woman with her hand on her face looking sad with the title above that states "National Suicide Prevention Month".

September is Suicide Prevention Month, a time when we come together to raise awareness, foster understanding, and offer support to those who may be struggling with thoughts of self-harm or suicide.

Suicide is one of the leading causes of death in the United States. In fact, it is the 10th leading cause of death in Missouri.

Some groups have higher rates of suicide.

The suicide rate among males in 2021 was about 4 times higher than the rate among females. Males make up 50% of the population but nearly 80% of suicides. Men who are 75 and older have the highest rate (42.2 per 100,000) compared to other age groups.

How can I take care of myself and others?

  1. Learn about the warning signs of suicide and how to support someone who may be struggling.

  2. Share information about crisis hotlines, mental health resources, and support groups. You never know who may need this information.

  3. Make it a habit to check in on friends and loved ones, especially during hard times. Your support can make a big difference.

  4. Be a good listener without judgment.

  5. Advocate for mental health awareness in your community, workplace, or school. Encourage others to get help when they need it.

How can I find help?

You can get immediate help for yourself or someone else by calling or texting 988 (like calling 911). 988 offers 24/7 access to trained crisis counselors who can help people going through mental health-related problems.

If you live in Lincoln County, MO, you also have access to free mental health services for children ages 0-19 through the Lincoln County Resource Board. Learn more by visiting: https://www.lincolncountykids.org/contracted-agencies/

Never forget, help is available!

Together, we can create a world where people feel valued, heard, and supported, where they can find hope even in their darkest moments.
