Silver Diamine Fluoride

Silver Diamine Fluoride

Does your child have cavities but can’t see the dentist right away? We can apply Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) to help.

If your child is seen with our mobile dental services and has a cavity or severe decay, our dental provider may recommend silver diamine fluoride (SDF).

What is it?

Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) is a liquid that is applied to cavities. It works fast to slow down cavities. A dental provider will apply it directly to your child’s cavities with a small brush. SDF is used to slow down your cavities from getting worse, and help keep teeth healthy.

Why get it?

SDF can help stop or slow down your cavities from getting worse, which can delay or prevent the need for more invasive treatments such as fillings, crowns, or extractions (pulling teeth). SDF is a fast, easy, and painless treatment.

Why is it a good option?

SDF may be a good option for people who have trouble with other types of cavity treatments, including:

  • Cavities that need more than one treatment

  • Cavities that are difficult to treat

  • People with limited access to dental care

  • Very young children

  • People with intellectual/developmental disabilities

  • Older adults

SDF application is recommended every 6 to 12 months to stop or slow down cavities from getting worse.

Is it safe?

Yes! There have been no reports of major health risks or severe reactions to SDF. SDF does contain silver, so it should not be used if you are allergic to silver or have ulcers in your mouth.

Are there side effects?

SDF has cosmetic side effects. It permanently stains your cavities black. The healthy parts of your tooth will not be stained. Also, it causes temporary brown or white stains on skin and gums that have been touched by SDF. This can last up to 3 weeks.
