Tips for keeping your child’s smile clean!

Brushing twice per day and flossing once per day are important for healthy teeth and gums. Children ages 0-3 should use a smear of toothpaste the size of a grain of rice once they get teeth. Children ages 3-6 should use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste when bushing. Be sure to remind your child not to swallow the toothpaste. By age 7, children may be able to brush their own teeth. They may need to be supervised until they are age 10 or 11.

For good dental health, your child should eat a balanced diet with foods from all the major food groups. Sugary drinks including juice, sodas, sports drinks, and sugary snack foods are not good for dental health.

Fluoride is a mineral that strengthens teeth and protects them from decay. It is found in many toothpastes and vitamin supplements. Tell your child's dentist if you use bottled water at home, or a home water treatment system.
