What is norovirus?

Norovirus is the leading cause of vomiting and diarrhea, and foodborne illness in the U.S.

What is it?

Norovirus is a very contagious virus that causes vomiting and diarrhea. It’s sometimes called the "stomach flu" or the "stomach bug", but it’s not related to the flu.

How does it spread?

You can get norovirus from sick people and through contaminated food, water, or surfaces. Most norovirus is spread by people who didn’t wash their hands. It’s important to know that hand sanitizer alone does not work well against norovirus. The virus can also stay in your poop for 2 weeks or more after you feel better. You can still spread it during that time. If you are sick, stay home and do not prepare, handle food, or care for others.

How do you treat it?

There’s no medicine to treat it, and dehydration is the biggest health risk with norovirus. Most people get better in 1 to 3 days.

What should I do if I think I have norovirus?

If you are sick, stay home and do not prepare, handle food, or care for others. Most people with norovirus illness get better within 1 to 3 days.

You should:

  • Rest

  • Drink plenty of fluids

  • Watch for dehydration

  • Seek healthcare for severe dehydration
