Radon action month
What is radon?
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that has no color or smell. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), “radon comes from the natural (radioactive) breakdown of uranium in soil, rock and water and gets into the air you breathe.” It can enter your home or business.
What are the health impacts from radon?
Radon is a health risk when found indoors. It has been found to increase the risk of lung cancer and is the #1 leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers. You won’t know if there is radon in your home unless you test for it. Radon is not known to cause asthma or other respiratory distress.
Has your home been tested for radon?
Testing your home for radon is easy! Missouri offers free radon test kits for residents. The kit can be ordered online and will be shipped directly to you. If the test results come back high for radon, you should take action by contacting a certified radon contractor.
Did you know?
42.7% of 342 radon test kits in Lincoln County had high results (over 4pCi/L). About 1 in every 3 home tested for radon in Missouri have been found to have high levels of radon. If your home has high levels of radon, this can be fixed by contacting a certified radon contractor to install something called a “radon reduction/mitigation system”.
