What happens at my child’s first dentist appointment?

At your child’s first dentist visit, our staff will look in their mouth and examine their jaw to make sure everything is developing properly. You can expect to see a dental hygienist and also our dentist, Dr. Emily. We understand that your child may not sit perfectly still during their first dental visit, that is completely normal! You may choose to have your child sitting on your lap in the exam chair. After checking for cavities or other issues, Dr. Emily will clean your child’s teeth and talk with you about how to implement healthy habits.

Want to prepare your child for their first visit? Make sure to talk with them before-hand and let them know what will happen. You can also try watching a cartoon with their favorite character going to the dentist. Example: Daniel Tiger goes to the Dentist.

This will help them to feel confident and understand what will happen. You can start talking with them about the dentist when you schedule the appointment. Lastly, try letting them “examine” your teeth or their stuffed animal’s teeth!
